While ordering Moto G, the first thing which was striking in my mind was its unexpandable memory. Its also a major deal breaker, but for me Moto G's pros over weigh the cons.
There might be any day when you need to factory reset your device, it might be because you installed a corrupted APK, you played with the developer settings or your device is unexpectedly not booting up. there might be any of the reasons.. But its always a better idea to have a backup with you either on your PC or on the cloud.
*** This post is especially made for Moto G, Moto E and Moto X but it will work flawlessly in other devices also. The Device used here is a Moto G (XT 1033). ***
I recommend you to please make a backup of the following items at least once in 15 days:
- Contacts
- Messages
- Call Logs
- Clicked Photos
- Shot Videos
- WhatsApp messages
- Apps
So, Lets start one-by-one:
Backing up Contacts:
the best way to make a backup of contacts is using the Google's own sync service. Its much better than the third-party apps.I Really don't recommend any app, the sync work seamlessly. To enable sync, Go to:
Settings> Google (under Accounts section) > touch three button menu and click on Sync Now.
This will sync all your Google Apps which is a better idea but will eat a bit of more mobile/WiFi data.
Still if you want to backup only contacts, then do this:
Settings> Google (under Accounts section) > your Gmail ID > and then touch on- 'Contacts' and 'People details'.
Backing up Messages:
For backing up your messages, I will recommend you to install app "SMS Backup and Restore" from Play store. I am not referring other apps because sometimes time stamp (date and time of your messages) get destroyed. This problem does not occurs in this app. A very easy to use app with no glitches. All your backups get stored in /mnt/sdcard/SMSBackupRestore. Copy this folder either to PC or upload the backup files to cloud before formatting your device. The backup file made is in XML format, So you can easily read your messages on your PC.
Backing up Call Logs:
For backing up call logs I will recommend the app "Call log backup and restore" from Play Store. The reason for recommending this app is same as described above. In this app too, the backup file made is in XML format, So you can easily read your logs on your PC. All your backups are stored be default in /mnt/sdcard/CallLogBackupRestore.Copy this folder either to PC or upload the backup files to cloud before formatting your device. Making backup is quick and restoring is super quick!
Backing up Photos and Videos:
Photos and videos captured from the phone are ones life and loosing them is a nightmare. So why wait for such a moment. There is no better app for backing up purpose other than than you. Just connect your phone via USB. Click here, if you are facing problems connecting to your PC. When successfully connected, open your phone's folder on the PC, browse to DCIM/Camera/,since all your captured photos and videos are stored at this location. Copy all images & videos and paste them to your desired destination in your PC.
I recommend you to save these images in D: or E: partition of your PC.
Backing up WhatsApp messages:
Today WhatsApp has been a basic part of our life. We use WhatsApp more than SMS. So, backing them up is equally important. By default WhatsApp itself makes backup itself at 4 AM. But to be on the safe side, do it yourself also. To Backup WhatsApp messages, launch WhatsApp, Touch 3-button menu at top right corner. Select Settings > Chat Settings > Backup Conversations. In your phone memory, these Backups are made at /mnt/sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. Copy this folder to PC before formatting your device.
Backup Apps:
Backup Apps:
Backing up apps can be useful if you are on 2G/3G and dont want to loose your precious data pack. For backing up APK on non rooted phones, I would recommend ES File Explorer. Open ES File Explorer>Tools>App Manager. Select the apps whose backup you want to make, and press Backup. All the APKs will be saved in /Backups/Apps/ folder.
NOTE: App data cannot be backed up with this method. For that you need a rooted device and an app called "Titanum Backup" on Play Store.
Now After following all the above steps, you are completely safe to factory reset your device.

Whats the difference between contact sync and people details sync?
ReplyDeleteAlso .I m facing a problem with backing up contacts cuz I cant add contact directly to phone memory but it is allowing me to add the contacts under google a/c only... cant I add in poo hone memory and not to associate with google id like samsung phone's??
contacts sync synchronises your contacts while People details sync details of contacts like contact's Google+ info etc.
Deletethe contacts added under google a/c will be synced be google servers. So please dont move them to phone memory. See, in stock android experience, google gas prioritized for google server sync unlike samsung... you can move the contacts by: People>3-button menu>Import/Export>Export to Storage.
HI
